Curriculum - Student Transition

At Lower Plenty Primary, we understand that choosing a school which will give your child the best start to their education journey is a big decision.  We endeavour to ensure that every child makes a successful transition to primary school and that it is a trouble-free and happy experience where parent participation and involvement is actively encouraged and appreciated.  We welcome the opportunity to show you what Lower Plenty Primary School has to offer you and your child.

This evening provides general information about our school and gives prospective parents the opportunity to meet staff and ask questions. Our 2018 Information Evening will be held during Education Week, on Tuesday 22nd May at 7.00pm.

We extend an invitation to all parents considering a quality educational environment for their children to contact the school to arrange a personalised tour. During these tours, you will have the opportunity to visit our classrooms to experience our school and see our school in action.

If you are considering Lower Plenty Primary School for your child, we would love you to come and visit us so that we can show you the programs we offer. To organise a tour of the school and to meet our new school principal, Janene Worsam contact the school via email or phone 9435 2585.

During Education Week we also offer prospective and current parents the opportunity to visit our school. During your visit you will be guided by our student leaders and given the chance to see our school in action.

Starting off in a new school is a major step for both families and students and will represent one of many transitional periods that occur through a person's life. Whether transition is occurring from pre-school to school, between classes or Year 6 to secondary school, transition is made successful by building positive experiences. At Lower Plenty Primary School we aim to build relationships and links for the family and child to promote a connected, secure and confident feeling within our school community.

Lower Plenty Primary School's Foundation Transition Program commences in the October prior to school entry.  There are also many informal transition activities throughout the year which enable your child to become familiar with the school facilities whilst meeting other students, families and staff.  Some of these events include our bi-annual Barn Dance, Family Disco and our annual Teddy Bear Evening.
Our Foundation Transition Program includes:
3 x 1 hr School Familiarisation Sessions.  During these sessions students participate in a variety of literacy, numeracy and art activities with other students and a classroom teacher.  Parents are also invited to attend Parent Information sessions which include details on curriculum, uniforms, the buddy program, school banking and tips on preparing your child for school.

A fourth session that typically runs from 11.30am-1.30pm and provides an opportunity for the new Foundation students to meet the Grade 5 students who will be their Grade 6 buddies.  Together they will complete an activity and enjoy a picnic lunch on the oval.
In November you are invited to a BBQ dinner with the current Foundation families.  This is a great time to meet families, teachers and staff. After dinner there will be a short information session which will cover starting school procedures, general school matters and any parent questions. A Parent Handbook will be provided which will contain general information and attendance times for the first month of school.
A final transition consists of a 2 hr morning session held in the second last week of school where teachers and classmates for the coming year meet together (including the new Foundation students). Teachers also meet together and share important information about students to provide them with a smooth transition into their next class.
This very special orientation program sets the scene for a happy and confident beginning to your child's school life.

Our school feeds to all of the secondary schools in the local area and thus secondary transition focuses on this important move into secondary schooling. Grade 6 students and parents attend open days and evenings at the secondary colleges, including attendance at a designated orientation day in December.

We actively work with the local secondary schools to ease students through the transition process. Information is forwarded early in the year setting out the regional timeline for enrolments. Secondary school students visit Lower Plenty Primary School to inform Year 6 students of their experiences and exciting programs as many secondary schools set up a learning environment that is similar to primary school.  At Lower Plenty Primary School our year 6 teachers liaise with Year 7 coordinators to discuss the needs of students attending their schools.
Foundation 2019 School Attendance during February
During the first week Foundation children will start with half day attendances.  After this week and throughout February, Foundation children will then attend full days on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays, individual student interviews will be scheduled throughout the first month. Your child's teacher will conduct preliminary literacy and numeracy assessments of your child. This assessment enables our staff to more effectively plan for your child's learning.

Foundation Buddies - Our grade 5 & 6 students build a special relationship with our Foundation students to promote an easier transition from kindergarten to school. The Buddy Program offers Foundation students a familiar face within the school yard and someone they can rely on to look out for them during the transitional first year.
